Sep 16, 2009 · I used a LQ9 and 4L80E in my 81 Trans Am and am thinking about putting a 5.3L w/ the LS6 cam in the red 81 I bought a couple of weeks ago. My LQ9 dynoed 315 rear wheel hp and 325 ft-lbs. torque. It is a stock engine with just programming. I'm going to install a TSP 228R cam this winter.
Just keep in mind that, the 400-450 rwhp you're after translates to 460-520 crank HP. Estimated of course. LQ4's factory rating is 300 ish HP at the crank and the LQ9 at best is 345hp at the crank..... they are truck motors and are cammed for torque. To reach the 450 rwhp would require an increase 150-175 crank HP.
The advantage of this for a hydraulic-roller-cammed LS engine is the ability to set the lifter preload. LS engines all use a net-lash system, which does not allow for adjusting the position of the rocker arm. This means that when the rocker is torqued in place, pushrod length determines the amount of lifter preload.

I guess it would blow someones mind that I have had a TPI Vortec 383 powered G-van, the Express van and now also have a LQ9 6.0L powered 1987 G20 van as well. The LQ9 has a small cam, headers and trailblazer SS intake. I also have a cammed 8.1 powered Tahoe.
